PHYSICIAN EXTENDER (NP/PA)

 

SITE OF SERVICE: Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton (NHCP), Intrepid Spirit Center (ISC), Camp Pendleton. 2016 Jacinto Road, Oceanside, CA 92058.

 

HOURS: Monday through Friday, 8- or 10-hour shifts scheduled between 0600 and 1800 (typical clinical hours 0700-1600), for a 40-hour work week. No on-call and no Federal holidays required.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW: 

The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner – at the Intrepid Spirit Center, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, delivers specialized, primary, and acute care to active-duty service members recovering from traumatic brain injury and the complex physical and psychological sequelae of military service. This federal contract position offers a clinically focused, interdisciplinary practice environment with no call, no weekends, and malpractice coverage provided under a DHA personal services arrangement.

 

POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS: 

Education:

–       Bachelor's Degree and graduate of an accredited college or university certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). 

–       Master's degree in nursing accredited by: Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  

Board Certification: 

–       Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). 

–       Certified by American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or the recognized national nursing certification organization for the specialty area of practice as appropriate (for example, National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses, American Nurses Association, National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Specialties).

Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner from any U.S. State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or U.S. Virgin Islands. 

Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required prior to start date. Certification must be reviewed and renewed bi-annually at no cost to the Government. 

Experience: Two years of experience providing direct patient care in a clinical setting within the past five years.

DEA Registration: DEA registration number required. 

Citizenship: U.S. Citizen required. 

 

DUTIES: 

·      Provide a full range of Physician Assistant services in primary and specialty medical care within the limits of their training and privileges granted by the MTF (e.g., supervise and provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine, acute and chronic conditions involving any and all organ systems; provide immunizations; diagnose, treat, and counsel patients as indicated).

·      Technically direct and provide care for a variety of diseases and types of injuries (i.e., acute, chronic and minor trauma), and the skills to recognize emergency conditions in order to diagnose, prescribe for and treat diseases, disorders and injuries, and refer the more complex cases and serious conditions to qualified medical personnel and perform designated treatment.

·      Technically direct and teach other staff, provide educational lectures and participate in in service training to staff members.

·      Promote preventive care and health maintenance including annual physicals, positive health behaviors and self-care through both formal and individual education and counseling.

·      Provide a full range of Physician Assistant services in primary and specialty medical care

 within the limits of their training and privileges granted by the MTF (e.g., supervise and

 provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine,

 acute and chronic conditions involving any and all organ systems; provide

 immunizations; diagnose, treat, and counsel patients as indicated).

·      Prescribe in accordance with approved treatment protocols and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee approved medications and immunizations.

·      Identify a medical problem and determine appropriate action to meet the problem,

 including referral to a physician.

·      Perform specific diagnostic and therapeutic practices and procedures in accordance with scope of practice.

·      Establish collaborative rapport with physician, nursing and others in order to promote and facilitate primary care services.

·      Teach patients and family member's healthy regimen and responsibility for achieving

 wellness.

·      Attend staff meetings to provide case discussion, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS

Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Team work skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
