YOUTH CAREGIVER
SITE OF SERVICE: U.S. Customs & Border Protection
JOB SUMMARY:
U.S. Customs & Border Protection is looking for bilingual caregivers, who will perform the duties and responsibilities for Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) and Family Units (FMUA). The caregiver shall maintain a safe environment, observing and encouraging adherence to safety rules and health guidelines. This will include assisting with the general care of children performed at a level of quality and according to industry safety standards commensurate with those required of caregivers employed at state-licensed daycare facilities.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Experience: Not required. Will train in the following skills: personal care and toileting for children; basic hygiene and basic infection control; maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment; basic first aid and basic emergency procedures; understanding abuse and neglect.
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Must have a valid US Driver's License
Additional Certifications: CPR Certification (Preferred)
U.S. Citizenship: Individuals shall be U.S. citizens or Legal Permanent Residents residing in the US for 3 of the past 5 years.
Language Requirement: Ability to communicate fluently in English and Spanish.
Physical Capability: Shall be physically capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time and physically capable of performing all services required under the contract.
CORE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
· The Caregivers shall be responsible for the operation of the shower facilities and the care of children and infants as outlined below.
· The Caregivers shall perform the collection and bagging of dirty laundry and staging the bags for transport to on-site laundry trailer facilities. Caregivers are not required to actually perform the laundering as another third party will perform the laundering tasks.
· The Caregivers shall issue and collect Government-furnished shower/hygiene supplies.
· The Caregivers shall monitor (i.e., maintain visual contact) at all times all detainees going into and out of showers, from start to finish and adhering to DHS regulations implementing the Prison Rape Elimination Act (see, e.g., 6 C.F.R. § 115.115 (d)).
· The Caregivers shall assist in bathing children, ages 17 and under, as required.
· The Caregivers shall be responsible for storing Government-furnished clothing in designated shelves and issuing it to UC detainees and minor children family members while the detainees’ clothing is being washed.
· The Caregivers shall maintain a safe working environment, observing and encouraging adherence to safety rules and health guidelines set in place by the USBP staff and Medical staff, including any applicable COVID-19 special requirements for the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as masks and gloves. Guidelines are constantly changing and shall be presented upon start of contract.
· The Caregivers shall assist with the general care of children to include monitoring, changing diapers, assisting with toilet use and hand-washing, feeding when a child is not able to feed him- or herself, assisting to facilitate other requirements to include recreation supervision (e.g. reading, drawing, outside physical activity) when available or needed, and identifying and tending to other similar basic needs of children as they arise. All duties shall be performed at a level of quality and according to industry safety standards commensurate with those required of Caregivers employed at state licensed daycare facilities.
· The Caregivers shall assist in keeping shower facilities well-ordered and cared for between uses. Cleaning and sanitizing shall be the responsibility of a separate cleaning company.
· The Caregivers shall assist children in custody in communicating with and interacting with family members who may be held in a separate pod or area of the facility.
· The Caregivers shall assist in the distribution of meals delivered to the facility, as needed.
HOURS: 12 hour shifts – 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM or 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. 3.5 days a week – Sun-Wed or Wed-Sat. Weekends & Holidays required
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS
Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Team work skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
