HOURS OF PERFORMANCE 

Primary coverage hours are Monday through Friday, 1600-0800, and Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays, 24 hours per day. Coverage during daytime hours (Monday through Friday, 0800-1600) may be required on an infrequent basis. 

 

Additional scheduling requirements include: 

  • Contract physicians must work a minimum of two (2) scheduled shifts per month to maintain active system access. 
  • Contract personnel shall not provide services at another institution within eight (8) hours of a scheduled shift. 
  • A complete monthly schedule availability shall be submitted forty-five (45) days in advance.
  • Overage hours may be required to ensure continuity of care. Hand-off to inbound physician is required before departure. 
  • Per diem health care providers are acceptable for this requirement. 

 

Federal Holidays (contract personnel are required to work): 

  • New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day 

 

POSITION OVERVIEW 

The Emergency Medicine Physician supporting the Emergency Department at Keller Army Community Hospital serves active-duty soldiers, U.S. Military Academy cadets and cadet candidates, and their family members at one of the Army's most storied military installations. KACH's enrollment exceeds 12,000 beneficiaries, and the ED serves as the primary acute care entry point for the West Point Health Service Area. This federal contract position offers a clinically focused practice environment with malpractice coverage provided and no primary care administrative burden. Contract physicians join a multidisciplinary team at a facility that supports NCAA athletics, multiple GME fellowship programs, and a robust patient population spanning pediatrics through geriatrics. 

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS 

  • Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution. Completion of a residency in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine is required. 
  • Licensure: Current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in New York State
  • Board Certification: Board certification in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine is required. The DoD recognizes certifications issued by boards that are members of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists. 
  • Experience: Minimum three (3) years of experience in an Emergency Department within the last four (4) years post-residency. 
  • DEA Registration: Active DEA registration number required. 
  • NPI: Active 10-digit National Provider Identifier (NPI) from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services required. 
  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Advanced Traumatic Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required or as directed by MTF policy. All certifications must be maintained in current status. 
  • Citizenship: U.S. citizenship required. 
  • Security: National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) or equivalent background investigation required. Automated Data Processing Sensitive position designation. 
  • Language: Professional proficiency in English required, both written and verbal. 

 

DUTIES 

  • Provides comprehensive emergency medicine services including evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of urgent and acute diseases, injuries, and conditions across all body systems for a patient population that includes active-duty military, cadets, and beneficiaries. 
  • Performs timely history and physical examination; documents findings and develops individualized treatment plans in accordance with TJC guidelines. 
  • Documents all patient encounters in MHS Genesis (Electronic Health Record), including ordering of ancillary procedures, medications, and follow-up; all encounters must be completed or transferred to another provider prior to end of shift. 
  • Codes all patient encounters using HCPCS, ICD, and CPT coding systems in compliance with MTF, DHA, and DoD policies. 
  • Responds to and provides initial management of cardiopulmonary arrests; arranges Emergency Medical Services backup as appropriate. 
  • Makes preliminary interpretation of radiographic films, including CT scans, and performs initial interpretation of electrocardiograms. 
  • Follows up on laboratory and radiology orders, including direct patient contact and communication with the primary care manager regarding results. 
  • Stabilizes and manages patients in medical or surgical emergencies; facilitates appropriate transfer or referral to specialist care per MTF policies. 
  • Prescribes medications in accordance with the MTF formulary; follows MTF procedures for generic substitutions. 
  • Consults with other medical specialists as clinically appropriate and communicates findings, diagnosis, and treatment plans clearly to all relevant health care personnel. 
  • Participates in peer review (10 chart reviews per month on a rotating basis), patient care conferences, professional staff conferences, and process improvement initiatives per MTF policy. 
  • Maintains compliance with all applicable DoD, DHA, and MTF policies including privacy, HIPAA, records release procedures, and OSHA safety requirements. 

  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS:

Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment working with complex TBI and psychological health cases. Must possess knowledge of Dragon dictation software, MHS Genesis, and Microsoft Office programs. Must comply with regulatory, MTF, and Joint Commission quality inspection/peer review/utilization management requirements. High level of adaptability required to work with interdisciplinary teams including neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and rehabilitation specialists.
