General Dentist – Mobile Dental Clinic

Location: Mobile Dental Clinic – White River Junction, VT (deployed to surrounding rural areas)

Start Date: March 1, 2026 (Estimated)

SITE OF SERVICE

White River Junction VA Medical Center, 163 Veterans Drive, White River Junction, VT 05001. This position operates a mobile dental clinic that is based out of White River Junction and deployed to surrounding rural areas throughout VISN 01 to serve Veterans with ischemic heart disease who may be in highly rural areas.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This position supports the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act (Section 144) Dental Pilot Program. The program provides dental care for Veterans diagnosed with ischemic heart disease, with emphasis on serving rural populations through mobile dental clinic services.

HOURS

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM

Federal holidays off. Estimated 1,920 hours per contract year. Position may be filled by one full-time dentist or two part-time dentists equivalent to one full-time position.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The General Dentist provides comprehensive dental care to Veterans through a mobile dental clinic, performing all phases of general dentistry including diagnosis, restorative procedures, preventive care, oral surgery, endodontics, prosthodontics, and periodontics. The dentist supervises dental hygienists and dental assistants, ensures compliance with VA policies and standards, and contributes to pilot program quality improvement and reporting initiatives.

POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS

       Degree: Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA), Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), or U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting body

       Examination: National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) passed, administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE)

       Licensure: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in the state of Vermont

       Experience: Minimum three (3) years creditable experience as a full-time practicing clinical dentist serving diverse adult patient populations; VA dental clinic experience preferred

       Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification from American Heart Association approved program

       Driver's License: Current unrestricted driver's license in the United States with ability to drive mobile dental clinic (CDL not required); willingness to complete VA vehicle operation training per VA Directive 0637

       Technical Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft 365 Office programs and electronic health record systems

DUTIES

       Operate mobile dental clinic and ensure all equipment is functional and safely transported; assist with setup and breakdown at various locations

       Ensure mobile dental clinic is parked/stored securely at White River Junction at end of each shift and safely deployed to surrounding areas

       Conduct comprehensive dental examinations, diagnosis, and treatment planning considering each Veteran's comprehensive patient history

       Develop and discuss treatment plans with patients using Veteran-centric care models

       Perform progressive phased dental care (Acute, Disease Control, Definitive Treatment, and Maintenance phases) including diagnosis, restorative (including implants), preventive, oral surgery, endodontic, prosthodontic, and periodontic procedures

       Stabilize and treat acute dental issues such as infections or trauma; manage post-operative care

       Supervise dental hygienist and dental assistants in accordance with Vermont dental board regulations

       Assign staff duties to dental hygienist and dental assistants as appropriate

       Verify dental eligibility of Veterans and render decisions on Class III and Class VI eligibility determinations per 38 U.S.C. §§1710(c) and 1712

       Collaborate with VA dental or medical staff for treatment that cannot be provided in mobile clinic setting

       Follow defined processes in Electronic Health/Dental Record for documentation; maintain meticulous records

       Coordinate sterile processing of reusable medical devices with facility Sterile Processing Service

       Maintain and clean equipment and instruments per Office of Dentistry Infection Control Standards

       Ensure proper handling and disposal of waste, sharps, and biohazard material

       Engage in regular peer reviews with VA dentists; participate in meetings to discuss complex cases and share best practices

       Report trends and issues arising from mobile dental unit treatment; ensure SOPs are consistent with national policies

       Assist in preparing reports summarizing dental care activities and performance metrics

       Assist in gathering stakeholder feedback and developing strategies to improve pilot program effectiveness

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS

Must abide by all vehicle traffic laws and be responsible for any violations. Immediately notify designated POC of any mobile dental clinic issues requiring maintenance/repair. No personal reusable medical devices or equipment shall be used in patient care. Must complete all VA-required training sessions and certification programs within specified timelines. Strong interpersonal skills required to work with all levels of staff. Must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of industry best practices and evidence-based principles. Subject to VA acceptance based on conduct standards mirroring Federal Personnel Regulations.
