SLEEP MEDICINE PHYSICIAN (SOMNOLOGIST)
SITE OF SERVICE:
National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) MD AND/OR Intrepid Spirit Center, 3908 Long Street, Fort Bragg, NC 28310
HOURS:
Monday through Friday, 8- or 10-hour shifts between 0600-1800 (typical clinical hours 0700-1600). 40 hours per week. No on-call or Federal holidays required.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Sleep Medicine Physician (Somnologist) will provide specialized sleep medicine services at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) or Intrepid Spirit Center under a Defense Health Agency (DHA) personal services contract. The Somnologist serves as a Subject Matter Expert in sleep medicine, working collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to diagnose and treat service members affected by traumatic brain injury (TBI) and related conditions including Anomalous Health Incidents (AHI). This role involves examination, diagnosis, and treatment of the full range of sleep and breathing disorders, polysomnography interpretation, and collaboration with neurological and behavioral health specialists.
POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS:
• Education: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) from an accredited medical school in the United States or Canada, or ECFMG certification for foreign medical graduates.
• Board Certification: Board eligible/certified in Sleep Medicine.
• Licensure: Current, valid, unrestricted license as a Somnologist from any U.S. State, DC, Puerto Rico, or U.S. Territory.
• Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Internship/Residency: Successful completion of ACGME or AOA-approved internship and residency program in sleep medicine or related specialty, plus fellowship in sleep medicine.
• Citizenship: U.S. Citizen required.
• Security: Must possess and maintain Tier III security investigation.
• DEA Registration: DEA registration number required if prescribing controlled substances.
DUTIES:
• Serve as somnologist responsible for examination, diagnosis, and treatment of the full range of outpatients with sleep disorders seen in the clinic.
• Perform wide range of medical duties covering all aspects of disorders involving Sleep Medicine of moderate to severe complexity.
• Examine patients; order, interpret, and evaluate full range of tests for patients when diseases or pain syndromes are affecting sleep.
• Understand and utilize scoring standards as recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
• Make diagnoses and prescribe appropriate treatments including CPAP, bi-level airway pressure, oxygen, drugs, or behavioral modalities.
• Provide expert assessment and interpretation of polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing, actigraphy, and overnight oximetry.
• Interpret and report results of polysomnograms, electroencephalograms, MEG, olfactory testing, and neuro-cognitive evaluations.
• Conduct comprehensive neurological exams on patients including cranial nerve, motor/sensory, and cerebellar function.
• Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) in sleep medicine collaborating with clinicians on complicated neurological and neuropsychiatric cases.
• Oversee and educate interdisciplinary teams responsible for testing and treating patients with sleep issues.
• Provide prescription renewal and telephone consultative services; provide telemedicine consultations as appropriate.
• Teach and provide consultation to other health care providers including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical students, interns, residents, and fellows.
• Document and close notes in MHS Genesis within three (3) business days of patient encounters.
• Respond to beneficiary messages in MHS Genesis secure portal within one (1) business day.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS:
Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment working with complex TBI and psychological health cases. Must possess knowledge of Dragon dictation software, MHS Genesis, and Microsoft Office programs. Must comply with regulatory, MTF, and Joint Commission quality inspection/peer review/utilization management requirements. High level of adaptability required to work with interdisciplinary teams including neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and rehabilitation specialists.
