Occupational Therapist 

 

SITE OF SERVICE: 

Walter Reed, MD(NICoE/NCR)  

  • National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) provides specialized care for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Psychological Health (PH) conditions. 

 

POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Degree/Education/Experience: Must have one of the following: 
  • Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy AND two (2) years of experience as an occupational therapist; NOTE: The baccalaureate degree must be from an approved program prior to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) January 1, 2005, decision that the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) would only accredit master or doctoral degree programs in occupational therapy. 
  • Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy AND two (2) full years of graduate education in a related field; NOTE: The baccalaureate degree must be from an approved program prior to the AOTA January 1, 2005, decision that ACOTE would only accredit master or doctoral degree programs in occupational therapy 
  • Master's Degree or higher in occupational therapy. 
  • Internship/Residency:  N/A 
  • Board Certification: Candidates must possess a current National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) certification as an occupational therapist. 
  • Cardiac Certifications: Must have the following hands-on certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross: 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) 
  • Licensure: must possess a full, current, and unrestricted state license, to practice occupational therapy in a state, territory or Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia 
  • U.S. Citizenship: Shall be a U.S. citizen 
  • English Language Requirement:  Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers. 
  • Physical Capability: Shall be physically capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time and physically capable of performing all services required under the contract. 

 

DUTIES: 

  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of contemporary occupational therapy across multiple areas of practice, and the demonstrated ability to apply this advanced knowledge to provide clinical guidance to Staff OTs. 
  • Conduct independent and specialized evaluation of the patient by using a variety of standardized and non-standardized tests to determine occupational therapy needs. 
  • Evaluate procedures/methods including but are not limited to: the review of medical record, subjective interview with patient and/or family/caregiver and/or care team; observation, vital sign monitoring, and functional evaluation of strength/range of motion/coordination/sensation, activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, cognition, motor function/control, functional mobility, and safety. 
  • Develop an effective and client centered treatment plan that is appropriate and indicated for the disabilities and conditions being treated. 
  • Establish short and long-term goals that are objective, measurable, and within certain time frames. • Develop and carries out a full range of occupational therapy treatments using a variety of evidence-based treatment methods and techniques.  
  • Provides age-specific care that is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, cultural, and chronological maturation needs of the patient. Demonstrates knowledge of changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric age groups; ability to assess and interpret data about the patient's status; and ability to identify age-specific needs and provide the appropriate care based upon the agerelated factors. 
  • Develop and implement individualized client centered occupational therapy treatment programs for patients. 
  • Complete training to obtain knowledge and maintain competency in the following systems: MHS Genesis, Dragon dictation software, and Microsoft Office programs. 
  • Comply with regulatory, MTF, and Joint Commission quality inspection/ peer review/ utilization management requirements, and applicable system applications. 
  • Contractor employees shall prepare all documentation to meet or exceed established MTF standards, to include, but not limited to: timeliness, accuracy, content, and signature. Contractor employees shall only use DoD approved abbreviations for documentation in the patient health records. (DoDI 6025.13 and DoDM 6055.05) 
  • Document and close notes in MHS Genesis within three (3) business days of patient encounters. 
  • Respond to beneficiary messages submitted and received in the MHS Genesis secure portal systems within one (1) business day.  

 

HOURS:  

The work schedule for each contract worker under a personal services arrangement is as follows between 0600 – 1800 (typical clinic hours are 0700 – 1600, depending on location).  

 

Base Down Days: 

During a planned closure of the facility due to training, closures before or after holidays family down days, Employee will only be compensated for the actual hours worked.  If clinic is closed and employee is not able to work, employee will be required to use leave or take LWOP (without penalty).  

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS 

Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.  Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects.  Flexible and able to work with various personalities.  Team work skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
