CERTIFED NURSE ANESTHETIST
SITE OF SERVICE:
· Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA
· Full Time
POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS:
· Education: Master’s degree in nursing.
· Accreditation: Graduate from an academic program, approved by the Council on
Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Programs (COA).
· Certification: Certified as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) or the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).
· Cardiac Certifications: Must have the following hands-on certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross:
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
· Experience: Possess a minimum of twenty-four (24) months of experience as a CRNA within the preceding thirty-six (36) months.
· Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist in any one of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
· References: Provide two (2) letters of recommendation written within the last two (2) years attesting to the clinical skills. A minimum of one (1) of the letters must be from a supervisor. The other letter must be from either clinic or hospital administrators or practicing physicians. Recommendation letters shall attest to the quality and quantity of experience including, but not limited to, the communication skills between practitioner and patient and among peers, and must include name, title, phone number, date of reference, address and signature of the individual providing reference.
· U.S. Citizenship: Shall be a U.S. citizen
· English Language Requirement: Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers.
· Physical Capability: Shall be physically capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time and physically capable of performing all services required under the contract.
DUTIES:
· Provide a full range of nurse anesthetist services in accordance with privileges granted by the Commanding Officer.
· Administer anesthesia to any patient undergoing a surgical procedure, as designated by the attending physician.
· Obtain consultations, as appropriate, with a staff anesthesiologist i.e., patients meeting American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification three (3) or greater; pediatric patients less than three (3) months old).
· Remain with the patient as long as required by the patient's condition relative to his/her anesthesia status and until responsibility for proper patient care has been assumed by other qualified individuals. Personnel responsible for post-anesthetic care are to be advised of specific problems presented by the patient's condition.
· Record post-anesthetic visits, including at least one (1) note describing the presence or absence of anesthesia-related complications within forty-eight (48) hours of the procedure. While the number of visits will be determined by the status of the patient in relation to the procedure performed and the anesthetic administered, a visit should be made early in the postoperative period.
· Discharge or release from post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) according to established criteria. Provide follow-up evaluation and care related to anesthesia complications and/or side effects.
· In his/her observation, if the CRNA feels that an anesthetic will put the patient's life in jeopardy, then this condition must be discussed with the operating surgeon or the Head Anesthesiology Department (or designated representative). The CRNA can rightfully and legally decline to administer an anesthetic to a patient in this category without repercussion. The choice of anesthetic should be discussed with the operating surgeon.
· Check all equipment and agents to be used in the administration of the anesthetic to be sure it is in safe working order. Report all malfunctioning equipment to the Head, Anesthesiology Department or Chief Nurse Anesthetist.
· Check all resuscitative equipment prior to the beginning of the first (1st) surgery of the day. Any malfunctioning or missing equipment shall be reported to the Head, Anesthesiology Department or Chief Nurse Anesthetist immediately.
· Provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group including neonate, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients, such as interpreting nonverbal communication, safety practices and medication dosing of Neonates/Pediatrics; enlisting Adolescent patients in treatment, safety and security practices; and recognizing physical limitations, psychosocial needs, age related conditions, safety and medication precautions for geriatrics.
SPECIFIC TASKS:
· Maintain a level of productivity comparable with that of other individuals performing similar services.
· Participate in peer review and performance improvement activities.
· Practice aseptic techniques as necessary. Comply with infection control guidelines to include the proper handling, storage, and disposal of infectious wastes, and the use of universal precautions to prevent the spread of infection.
· Function with an awareness and application of safety procedures.
· Perform efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. Anticipate potential problems/emergencies and make appropriate interventions. Notify supervisor, director, or other designated person regarding problems that the contracted personnel is unable to manage.
· Apply an awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and strive to manage situations in a reduced risk manner.
· Participate in the implementation of the Family Advocacy Program as directed. Participation shall include, but not be limited to, appropriate medical examination, documentation, and reporting.
· Exercise awareness and sensitivity to patient/significant others' rights, as identified within the MTF.
· Maintain an awareness of responsibility and accountability for own professional practice.
· Participate in continuing education to meet own professional growth.
· Attend and/or comply with all annual training classes required by the MTF, to include but not limited to online annual training provided by the MTF: disaster training, infection control, Sexual Harassment, Bloodborne Pathogens, Fire and Safety, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE), MHS Genesis, and all other required training.
· Actively participate in the MTF’s Performance Improvement Program. Participate in meetings to review and evaluate the care provided to patients, identify opportunities to improve the care delivered, and recommend corrective action when problems exist.
· Participate in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members. Provide training and/or clinical direction as applicable to supporting government employees (e.g., hospital corpsmen, students, etc.).
· Attend and participate in various meetings as directed.
· Perform timely, accurate, and concise documentation of patient care.
· Operate and manipulate automated systems such as ADS, Essentris, MHS Genesis and Clinical Information System (CIS), participate in clinical staff Performance Improvement (PI) and Risk Management (RM) functions, as prescribed by the MTF Director. Maintain DOD email account as directed. The contracted personnel shall be responsive to all email and voicemail communications.
· Exercise appropriate clinical delegation of tasks and duties in the clinical direction and coordination of health care team members, patient care, and clinic activities.
· Maintain documentation of all treatment provided in accordance with clinic directives and prepare such records and reports as may be required. All records and reports must be legible. Abbreviations must be only those listed in local instructions.
HOURS:
Services will typically be provided Monday through Friday, between the hours of 0630 and 1800 hours, or a night shift from 1600-0700. Shifts will normally be scheduled for an eight and half (8.5) to fourteen and half (14.5) hour period, to include an uncompensated thirty (30) minute meal break if workload permits. Historically, the night shift may be required for three (3) nights per week. Services may be required more than 40 hours per week, however, in no instance will each Health Care Worker be required to provide services in excess of one hundred (100) hours per two-week period.
ON-CALL HOURS:
Each Health Care Worker (HCW) shall equitably share on-call with other CRNAs within the department. On-call on-site requires the HCWs perform the on-call services at the MTF (Military Treatment Facility). The HCWs shall not leave the MTF until completion of the on-call services. On-call services begin at the end of the normal workday during the workweek (Monday through Friday) and shall continue until commencement of the following workday. Saturday, Sunday, and the day of observance of Federal holiday shifts are 0745 and 1545, although, weekend coverage could include a twenty-four (24) hour shift. The HCWs shall normally provide on-call coverage approximately two (2) or three (3) times per month.
BASE DOWN DAYS:
During a planned closure of the facility due to training, closures before or after holidays family down days, Employee will only be compensated for the actual hours worked. If clinic is closed and employee is not able to work, employee will be required to use leave or take LWOP (without penalty).

Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Teamwork skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
