Position Summary

Provide comprehensive anesthesiology services to eligible veterans in a modern, multidisciplinary VA healthcare setting. The anesthesiologist delivers safe, timely, evidence-based care across operative, procedural, critical care, pain management, consultation, and emergency airway settings while meeting VA documentation, quality, privacy, and patient-safety requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·       Provide comprehensive perioperative anesthesiology care for cardiac surgery, orthopedic joint replacement, and major vascular, thoracic, neurosurgical, plastic, ENT, urologic, and ophthalmologic procedures.

·       Deliver anesthesia care for electroconvulsive therapy and diagnostic or therapeutic procedures in cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, gastrointestinal, and radiology suites.

·       Provide primary coverage for patients in the surgical intensive care unit and short-stay unit; support acute and chronic pain management, diagnostic transesophageal echocardiography, and emergency airway management.

·       Perform bedside consultations for non-ambulatory patients and outpatient clinic consultations for ambulatory patients, within granted privileges and scope of practice.

·       Be physically present and ready at the scheduled start of clinics and surgeries; provide timely care consistent with VA wait-time and consult-completion requirements.

·       Follow all medication policies and procedures; do not distribute sample medications.

·       Provide discharge education and coordinated follow-up instructions for anesthesiology clinical and surgical patients.

·       Communicate test results in accordance with VA requirements and coordinate patient care appropriately.

·       Document care completely and promptly in the VA electronic health record, safeguarding protected health information and referring record-release requests to the appropriate VA office.

·       Participate in continuous quality improvement, monthly morbidity and mortality meetings, monthly surgery staff meetings, and other required committees or meetings.

·       Complete required QM/PI documentation for procedures, complications, examinations, and outcomes.

·       Follow infection-control and patient-safety standards; document and report safety events through the VA Patient Safety Reporting System within 24 hours.

·       Maintain professional conduct and collaborate effectively with VA clinical and administrative personnel.

Required Qualifications

·       Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree with completed anesthesiology training sufficient for independent practice and VA privileging.

·       Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Candidates with a current or prior restricted, suspended, revoked, voluntarily surrendered, or application-denied license do not meet the solicitation requirement.

·       Board Certified or Board Eligible in Anesthesiology through the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA).

·       Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), or accepted equivalent credentials.

·       Eligibility for credentialing and clinical privileges at Salem VA Health Care System; services may begin only after required facility approvals.

·       Current National Provider Identifier (NPI) and current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate.

·       Technical proficiency in the clinical skills needed to perform the duties of the position, with verifiable education, training, competency, licensure, and certification records.

·       Fluency in spoken and written English, including the ability to speak, understand, read, and write effectively.

·       Ability to satisfy applicable U.S. work-authorization and E-Verify requirements and confirmation of no exclusion from Federal healthcare programs.

·       Ability to meet VA occupational-health, immunization, infection-control, background, security, privacy, and mandatory training requirements before and throughout assignment.

Credentialing, Health, and Training Conditions

·       Maintain continuing medical education and provide updated licenses, registrations, certifications, and CME documentation as required for privileging and re-privileging.

·       Before the first duty shift, provide required health documentation, including TB screening; MMR and varicella immunity; Tdap and annual influenza vaccination (or approved contraindication protocol); hepatitis B and bloodborne-pathogen documentation; and any required clearance following communicable-disease exposure.

·       Complete required VA training, including annual ACLS/BLS, ethics, patient rights and safety, infection control, privacy/HIPAA, suicide-risk management, workplace safety, MRI safety, and other facility-mandated courses, plus initial EHR and VistA Imaging training.

Performance Expectations

·       Practice within approved privileges and meet recognized national clinical standards, including applicable American Society of Anesthesiologists guidance and Joint Commission standards.

·       Remain on time and available for scheduled services; sign in and out accurately for timekeeping and contract verification.

·       Maintain complete, timely medical records and participate in FPPE/OPPE, peer review, patient-satisfaction, and other quality-monitoring activities.

·       Comply fully with VA privacy, confidentiality, HIPAA, medical-record, patient-safety, medical staff bylaws, and professional conduct requirements.

·       Notify the appropriate VA representative of obstacles to access or performance and report patient-safety incidents within required timeframes.

Physical and Work Environment

Work is performed on site in operating rooms, procedural areas, inpatient units, clinics, and other clinical environments. The physician must be able to safely perform the essential clinical functions of anesthesiology and comply with facility infection-control and occupational-health requirements.
