Neuro-Optometrist

 

SITE OF SERVICE: Intrepid Spirit Centers at Fort Carson, CO

 

HOURS: Monday through Friday, 8- or 10-hour shifts between 0600-1800 (typical clinical hours 0700-1600). 40 hours per week. No on-call or Federal holidays are required.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Neuro-Optometrist will provide specialized neuro-optometric services at the Intrepid Spirit Centers under a Defense Health Agency (DHA) personal services contract. The Neuro-Optometrist diagnoses and treats visual problems related to neurological conditions and traumatic brain injuries (TBI), providing rehabilitative treatment to retrain and strengthen neural connections in the brain to improve binocular vision. This role focuses on strengthening visual skills needed for daily activities, increasing independence, and improving quality of life for service members.

 

POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS:

       Education: Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited optometry school.

       Board Certification: Board certification in neuro-optometry required. Must have active ABCMO certification in medical optometry including specialization in ocular disease, retinal disease, and glaucoma.

       Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted state license to practice as a Neuro-Optometrist.

       Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

       Experience: As required to meet clinical competency requirements specified in credentialing instruction.

       Citizenship: U.S. Citizen required.

 

DUTIES:

       Diagnose and treat visual problems related to neurological conditions and traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

       Provide rehabilitative treatment to retrain and strengthen neural connections in the brain to improve binocular vision.

       Mentor in neuro-optometry; provide full range, depth, and scope of professional medical services to patients involved in concussive events.

       Provide accountability for assessment, testing, diagnosis, implementation, coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of severe neuro-optometric cases.

       Analyze, develop, plan, and implement individualized patient-specific rehabilitation programs and techniques.

       Provide training to patients and family members on preferred methods to encourage recovery.

       Provide expert consultation to interdisciplinary team; apply individualized patient-centered treatment to complex patients with co-morbidities including TBI, PTSD, and pain.

       Assess performance of vision and how vision integrates with all other senses using advanced technology and neuro-visual testing.

       Perform comprehensive vision examinations including evaluation of external/internal eye health, oculomotor control, eye teaming, stereopsis, binocularity, and visual field.

       Perform neuro-visual testing to determine how visual system processes information and integrates with other sense modalities.

       Develop and provide specific individual therapeutic treatment and rehabilitation to improve patient's visual function.

       Create individualized neuro-visual therapy sessions including procedures, exercises, activities, and perceptual games.

       Document and close notes in MHS Genesis within three (3) business days of patient encounters.

       Respond to beneficiary messages in MHS Genesis secure portal within one (1) business day.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS:

Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Team work skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
