DENTAL ASSISTANT 

SITE OF SERVICE

White River Junction – VA Medical Center

Mobile Dental Clinic supporting surrounding rural areas

 

POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS:

·        Degree: Certificate (high school or GED is required)

·        Certification: Certification. P.L. 97-35, Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act Of 1981, requires persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 C.F.R. Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs for and the Credentialing of Radiologic Personnel. To meet this requirement, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.

Provisions for certification of radiologic competence include the following options, with completion required within one month of onboarding:

·       Successful completion of the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.; OR (b) Successful completion of the Principles and Practice of Dental Radiology and Radiographic Safety courses and examinations developed by the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Dentistry. OR, (c) Successful completion of a radiation health and safety program or examination approved by a state board of dentistry or the Department of Defense DoD).

·        Cardiac Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification OR CPR Certification through American Heart Association.

·        Experience: Minimum one (1) year creditable experience practicing as a full-time dental assistant; VA dental clinic experience preferred.

·        Registration Current, unrestricted registration as a dental assistant in the state of Vermont

·        U.S. Citizenship: HCWs performing under this contract shall be U.S. citizens.

·        Language: Able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate.

·        Physical: Shall be physically capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time and physically capable of performing all services required under the contract.

 

 

DUTIES:

·        Operate mobile dental clinic and ensure equipment is functional and safely transported; assist with setup and breakdown at various locations

·        Ensure mobile dental clinic is secured at White River Junction at end of each shift

·        Perform chairside dental assistant duties for all phases of dentistry

·        Assist dentist and dental hygienist by preparing patients and instruments for dental treatment

·        Measure and record vital signs; adjust treatment as needed for age-specific needs of geriatric patients

·        Operate dental x-ray equipment, evaluate images for diagnostic quality, and utilize dental imaging safety techniques

·        Receive and route patients; record information related to patient care

·        Provide patients with education materials and proper verbal and written instructions related to care

·        Assist with electronic health/dental records, updating charts, treatment notes, and lab prescriptions as requested

·        Support clinic operations and patient workflows for dentist and dental hygienist

·        Assist with pre- and post-appointment dental operatory preparations

·        Assist in maintaining all inventory and report needed replacements

·        Coordinate sterile processing of reusable medical devices with facility Sterile Processing Service

·        Maintain and clean equipment and instruments per Office of Dentistry Infection Control Standards

·        Ensure proper handling and disposal of waste, sharps, and biohazard material

·        Assist with scheduling appointments and managing patient flow coordination

·        Act as point of contact between dental providers, Office of Dentistry, and stakeholders to resolve operational challenges

·        Assist in preparing reports summarizing dental care activities and performance metrics

HOURS:

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – 7:00 am – 5:30pm

No weekends and all Federal holidays off

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS

Must abide by all vehicle traffic laws and be responsible for any violations. Immediately notify designated POC of mobile dental clinic maintenance issues. No personal reusable medical devices or equipment shall be used in patient care. Self-directed and detail-oriented with well-developed time management and organizational skills. Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work with all levels of staff from varying backgrounds. Mastery of oral and written communication skills. Subject to VA acceptance based on conduct standards mirroring Federal Personnel Regulations.
