REGISTERED NURSE – MED SURG
SITE OF SERVICE:
· Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (SLVHCS) at 2400 Canal St. New Orleans, LA 70119
· Full Time
· Start Date: July 1st, 2025
POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS:
· Education: Associates or Bachelor’s Degree of Nursing
· Accreditation: Graduate from a college or university accredited by Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or as otherwise identified in the TO
· Cardiac Certifications: Must have the following hands-on certification through the American Heart Association
o Basic Life Support (BLS)
o Advanced Cardiac Live Support (ACLS) (preferred)
· Experience: Shall have eighteen (18) months of recent experience within the last five (5) years
· Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in any one of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
· U.S. Citizenship: Shall be a U.S. citizen
· English Language Requirement: Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers.
· Physical Capability: Shall be physically capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time and physically capable of performing all services required under the contract.
DUTIES:
· Utilize broad-based clinical knowledge to effectively assess, implement health promotion and prevention interventions, manage acute and chronic illness states, assist patient/residents in the attainment of optimal levels of functioning rehabilitation, evaluate patient/resident response to actual or potential health problems, and provide supportive measures for the dying patient/resident and their significant others.
· Maintain patient/resident confidentiality and a safe patient/resident care environment, including familiarity with requirements such as medication administration, patient/resident/family education, discharge process, restraint usage, hazardous waste disposal, etc., as defined by The Joint Commission and all other VA regulatory bodies.
· Perform the following tasks:
o Head-to-toe assessment.
o Insert IV lines.
o Care and management of peripheral and central lines, including PICC lines.
o Administer medication including IVs.
o Coordinate and participate in admission and discharge of patient.
o Measure vital signs, including pain (the 5th vital sign), pulse oximetry, etc.
o Perform wound care assessments including dressing changes (sterile and nonsterile), and obtaining wound cultures as necessary.
o Obtain and deliver specimens to lab.
o Perform tracheostomy care.
o Perform non-acute ventilator care, if needed.
o Perform suctioning including oral, nasogastric, and tracheostomy.
o Perform deep suctioning, which may include obtaining specimens.
o Assess for and administer tube feedings.
o Assist with routine urinary and bowel elimination including catheters, colostomies, and digital stimulation.
o Educate patients/residents and/or families regarding health and diagnoses and medication administration including indications for the medication.
o Respond and assist in an emergency situation.
o Provide clinical oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Assistants and Health Technicians.
o One-to-one observation to include virtual observation.
o Performing capillary blood glucose and monitoring.
· Provide patient/resident-centered care by performing the following tasks:
o Assess the health care needs of the patient/resident and maintain or develop a plan of care to meet interdisciplinary goals.
o Assess and act on significant changes in the patient’s/resident’s health condition.
o Carry out the plan of care by performing/assigning delegated tasks.
o Collect and document pertinent data into the electronic patient/resident medical record.
o Complete nursing assessments within required time frames, and in accordance with policy and procedure.
o Identify and act on predictable needs of the patient/resident.
o Meet the health care needs of patient/resident by assessing and assisting the patient/resident to meet expressed needs.
o Meet the emotional and spiritual needs of patients/residents and/or families prioritize and complete tasks within the RN’s assigned shift.
o Update patient/resident care plans.
o Notify assigned physician of any changes in condition.
o Report incidents of verbal or physical abuse immediately to the Nurse Manager of the unit they are assigned; or designated off-shift nursing leadership.
HOURS:
· 12-hour shifts, minimum of 36 hours per week
· Schedule: 0700-1930 and/or 1900-0730
· Shifts will include nights, weekends, and holidays
BASE DOWN DAYS:
During a planned closure of the facility due to training, closures before or after holidays family down days, Employee will only be compensated for the actual hours worked. If clinic is closed and employee is not able to work, employee will be required to use leave or take LWOP (without penalty).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS:
Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Team work skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
